A Personal Trainer will give you highly personalized support, advice, and exercise programming. Effective programming starts with an assessment to ensure you can work safely and effectively towards your aims. Research has shown that people who train with a Personal Trainer are most likely to adhere to their exercise habits and achieve their desired results.
Personal Trainers should be qualified health and exercise professionals. Studies include physiology and exercise physiology, anatomy and functional anatomy, psychology among other domains. In many countries, certification and recertification rules are very strict. In Belgium, there is currently no minimum standard of qualification, however.
That depends greatly on your aims and needs! A typical personal training session will normally last somewhere under one hour. There will be some kind of warm-up activity followed by your main training programme where you will focus on your goals using cardiovascular, strength or flexibility exercises. Finally, there will be some form of cool down or relaxation period. The program may vary from one session to the next according to the clients' needs and progress.
Functional rehabilitation is an extension of the traditional elements of physical therapy which uses various movement techniques allowing an injured athlete, or worker, or client to return an optimal level of movement or performance.
More specifically for general clients, it means returning individuals to a maximum level of independence in the activities that are important to them. For some, the focus may be on restoring their ability to fulfill home and professional activities independently and pain-free. Others may be looking to restore function in getting back to recreational, outdoor, or community activities.
Nutrition coaches work with the general population to facilitate the inclusion of healthy eating behaviors and empower their clients to take responsibility for their own health.
Nutrition coaches help people build practices that lead to improved health, body composition, and/or performance.
This requires that nutrition coaches have a deep understanding of nutrition science, but also of how a client thinks. How a client feels. How people live. Why people act the way they do.
Depending on your health profile and aims your Personal Trainer may ask for a certificate before you engage in intensive activities.
If medical conditions and/or past injuries might impact your participation in a training session it may be desirable for your Personal Trainer to communicate with your physical therapist or doctor directly or indirectly.
The right information will allow your Personal Trainer to avoid pitfalls and injuries and thus work more efficiently towards your aims.
